In brief, Norton appears to do a better job of protecting my computer, it does it more intuitively, and it does it as a better corporate citizen than McAfee. Finally, when I bought Norton, it came with a 100% rebate offer. So I simply disable it (simplest way is to right click on the upper portion of the toolbar and uncheck the Norton option). Other than that, NIS appears to run well in the background with little impact on the speed of either machine I use.
This offers moderate protection for internet users. The price is better than that of big box stores and Norton’s website. It blocks Google claiming that it is a discussion website, but allows yahoo without any problem. Similarly, occasionally you can get in to blocked websites just using the ‘back’ button in the browser. This is a bit crummy on their part. However either way it’s still cheaper than the other major for-pay antivirus product out there, which auto-bills you an egregious 79.00 each year for renewal on their product, which is inferior in my opinion.
I made the big mistake of installing NIS on 3 different machines and now every one of them will completely freeze on a regular basis (sometimes multiple times per day) while browsing the web. It requires a hard power cycle in order to recover. What more can I say other than great product and great price. I have been using Norton for years. The new Norton seems to be updating 10-20 times a day, constantly slowing down my computer. I can get all kinds of analysis and graphs that I do not need, but no help or even more importantly OPTIONS to stop the spastic eternal updating.
NIS continues the track record of excellence established by NIS 2010. I really like the way it blocks potentially harmful and phishing sites (we all do foolish stuff and click on bad stuff on occasion). I bought this product from Amazon because they had the best price. Norton renewals cost more than purchasing an entire “new” product.
One thing that is not so well advertised is that once you have one of these modern versions of Norton Internet Security, you can upgrade for free. So if you already have NIS 2010 – just upgrade. It is often cheaper simply to buy a new license (in a 50% off sale) than it is to renew the subscription. I have been using Norton Antivirus and then Norton Internet Security for as long as I can recall. It’s not as configurable as I would like, but is more transparent than Norton and it’s never blue screened my computers (and I’ve had five so far over the years). Finally, Norton simply employs Windows own defragmenter.
I just received this product and am very pleased with the pricing and the internet security. It was easy to install. I installed NIS on 11/2, by 11/5 Live Update stopped working and it doesn’t run automatically like it is supposed to. I have called, e mailed and even did a Live Chat with a representative who did a remote assistance fix, which took nearly 7 hours to download, it worked for less than two hours, and then stopped again.
Ultimately I just got fed up with the resource hogging McAfee, so I tried IS 2009. COFFEE MACHINE RENTAL.

All I have to do is enter the product key on our three machines, and I’m updated. One product key covers both our older 2009 and the newer versions. The problems I ran into: By installing this before the actual expiration date of my existing Norton Internet Security I shortchanged myself, because the expiration now is 365 days from date of the install, rather than 365 days added onto the existing expiration date. Then during the Norton install – it found the existing product but rather than save all settings and password, it deleted the existing Norton Internet Security and installed a fresh new copy with factory settings.
I am a long-time user of Norton’s products, and am well satisfied with Internet Security. I spend a lot of time online, and have not had any problems.
If something goes wrong, the program is very good at correcting itself without bothering you much. If you need more help, like with a reinstall, you can get “chat” help (better than phone help) that can take over your machine and do what they need to do to get you back running. After reading the reviews I decided to purchase Norton and give it another go – the program has really sped up my computer – works great! Also – the price here on Amazon is unbeatable. I can be reading on the Internet, or even be off-line, and all of a sudden a distracting Norton dialog box will pop up to inform me that Norton is performing system scans in the background. The only problem is that these scans take up so much memory that my browser or open program will lock up and crash, so I usually have to reboot, and by then, I lost my train of thought on what I was doing on the computer to begin with, and I find it very annoying! Amazon used to be my second shopping choice. Now Amazon is the first place I look for products on my shopping list! In addition, the tech gave me a 30-day extension on my current license year ‘just because’.
Firstly, this software runs perfectly in the background. I mean you barely notice it is there. I’d say buy it from 3rd parties like Amazon. You are better off buying a new box every year as I have never found it to be cheaper to let it auto-renew. The software installed on my computer in under 12 minutes and was up and running at that time. It can be used on three computers, a “BOON” for folks that have multiple family members using their own computers. This enabled me to install it on my old computer, and also my daughter’s laptop. Those two computers are not having any slowdown issues either, and the old computer is Windows XP. Norton is a good product. It does a good job of scanning without slowing down performance while using other programs. I have used Norton for many years, and they typically do a good job. This version of Internet security is no different.
I have had about 4 instances of virus and Norton cleaned up each one with no problems. Also, I have noticed no slowdown in my computer after switching to Norton.
