Blacksmithing 525 and Illustrious – What Changes Can We Expect?
It’s probably a good time to take a look at the changes that we can expect in the Blacksmithing profession in Warcraft as we approach Cataclysm. In particular, looking at what the new level 525 Illustrious Blacksmith may bring.
As usual Blizzard are keeping their cards very close to their chest. What little we do know suggests that their will be a great deal of “mix and match” possibilities in crafting that are derived from the new Archaeology profession.
The way it has been couched so far, it seems as if we may be actually given the option to add items to the recipe to improve their stats, or not as the case may be.
This simple change is actually quite a radical departure for Blizzard. It means that level 525 Illustrious blacksmiths will have a far greater choice in the usability of the pieces they craft, perhaps allowing items to be tailored to be used by different classes dependant on the buffs etc.. We will have to wait and see.
This is one way that the developers can add variation to the crafted weapons and armour in the game without having to create many more graphic models of the items.
Another is that the developers have hinted that professions will be more interdependent than before. What this means is that to craft items with one profession will require pre-crafted items from another (similar to the way Blacksmith’s make the rods that Enchanters need now)
Straight after Cataclysm is released I expect to see a real race for characters to reach level 525 Illustrious Blacksmithing. Remembering my experience with Burning Crusade and Wrath, the high levels of demand for the top crafted items dies off pretty quickly as character find better look in the instances. With that in mind, consider levelling up mining and maybe the new archaeology profession (which is secondary, and therefore can be used by all players). As without these support professions, levelling up Blacksmithing will be a very expensive prospect, and the profitability of your crafted items will be reduced, or possibly zero.
Personally, I hope Blacksmithing is given a boost this time. Wrath of the Lich King introduced a Grand Master tier that was full of holes. There was not an really adequate weapon for tank warriors, and given how many warriors are also blacksmiths, this really was not ideal. I hope for a fuller range of weapons and armour this time. After all, we only have a small window of opportunity to sell our wares before everyone is looting better from instances.
Cataclysm will bring change with it. I hope we can all look forward to having a great time reaching level 525 Illustrious Blacksmithing.
